Designing for Sight: How Dementia Changes Vision- An Experiential Online Workshop
21 May @ 14:00 - 15:30
Come and explore how dementia impacts your sight. Putting yourself in the shoes of a person with dementia: how might you respond, what might help you? How might this inform your research? Your practice?
An interactive and experiential online workshop which informs and inspires.
Aims and objectives
- Raise awareness that dementia affects more than memory. Vision and other senses can change in ways many designers and researchers don’t expect.
- Demonstrate specific vision issues common in dementia and practical mitigations.
- Foster researcher and technology-provider thinking about real-world impact and funding-aligned relevance.
- Enable participants to critically evaluate and adapt designs, prototypes, and study plans to be more dementia-inclusive.
What attendees will get out of it
- Clear, actionable guidelines for designing indoor/outdoor spaces, interfaces, and devices that account for dementia-related visual changes.
- Hands-on experience simulating the impact of dementia on sight.
- Concrete examples (e.g., colour/contrast choices for buttons, signage legibility, reducing visual clutter) that can be applied immediately.
- Ideas for strengthening research proposals and product roadmaps to increase relevance and impact for people living with dementia.
- Peer discussion, feedback, and practical next steps.
Target audience
- Researchers and technology providers working on indoor and outdoor environments, assistive tech, UX/UI, smart homes, wayfinding and urban design.
- Industry practitioners, designers, and anyone involved in technical solutions at any career stage.
- Those considering funding applications who want to increase the dementia-relevance and impact of their work.
